VISIT KOCHI
Kochi, also known as Cochin, is among one of the most visited tourist destinations in India. It is situated on the Southwest coast of the country, within the state of Kerala. Kochi is the perfect location for those with a desire to explore and immerse themselves in a unique culture. It is also the ideal getaway location for those that simply wish to relax and have a good time. There are countless activities and sites to visit in Kochi that will create breathless and unforgettable experiences. Tourism in Kochi sharply increased in the latter half of year 2017 and continues to increase steadily as more gain knowledge of the location. Gaura Travel offers the most competitive prices to this region as it is our primary goal to be 'your best way home'. Flights to Kochi from Melbourne take about 13 hours of travel.
THE BACKWATERS OF KOCHI
The Backwaters of Kochi, also known as the Malabar Coast consists of a series of interconnected lagoons, rivers, canals and lakes that wrap their way around the southern land in a labyrinthic fashion. Kochi Houseboats (Kettuvallams) are one of the most popular tourists’ attractions in Kerala. There are over 2000 houseboats plying the Backwaters of Kochi. Kochi Houseboats are floating cottages with a sleeping area, dining area, a sit out on the deck and western-style toilets. The onboard staff prepare dishes with the flavors of Kochi. Many tourists opt to stay overnight on Kochi Houseboats to enjoy an authentic rural experience. The interior dining rooms of the houseboats are usually open on three sides providing an awe-inspiring view of the Kochi Backwaters and other boats. Kochi Houseboats are brought to a standstill during the night and mealtime. All Kochi Houseboats are motorized and air-conditioned, many tourists request the electricity to be switched off and lanterns are provided to create a rural setting. Almost all resorts and hotels in the area have their own houseboats offering both overnight and sunset cruises. There is nothing quite like the Backwaters of Kochi as it is geographically completely unique to the rest of the India.
FORT KOCHI
Fort Kochi is a small region within the city of Kochi, many tourists stay at this location due to its proximity to almost every attraction and tourist activity point. There are many accommodation options in this area including luxurious hotels and home stays. The main attraction in this region is the Indo-Portuguese Museum. The museum was established over 100 years ago in a bid to protect and showcase the rich cultural heritage and Portuguese influence of Kochi.
MARINE DRIVE
Marine Drive is a picturesque promenade in Kochi. It was built specifically for the Kochi Backwaters and is a popular gathering place for the local population. Ironically, by name, no vehicle is allowed on the promenade. Together with the promenade there are large fast food junctions, including Marrybrown, DiMark and Coffee Bar. A view of the sunset and sunrise over the sea mouth, and a mild breeze from Lake Vembanad made Marine Drive an important tourist destination in Kochi. Hundreds of people (both natives and tourists) are on the promenade during the evening. The walking trail starts from the High Court hub and runs all the way to Rajendra Maidan. There are also several boats for hire along the promenade.
JAWAHARLAL NEHRU STADIUM
The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, also known as Kaloor Stadium is situated within the heart of Kochi. It lies beside the Banerjee Road between Kaloor and Palarivattom, a common stretch among many city bus routes. It serves as a multi-purpose stadium that has a capacity of up to 60,000 people. The stadium hosts an extensive amount of cricket and soccer matches throughout the year. The grounds also serve as a venue for cinema events, political rallies and exhibitions in Kochi city. The Stadium Link Road from the southern side allows access from Thammanam and Kathrikadavu, although there is no public transport along this route. The stadium is situated at 2.5 km and 5.2 km from the North (Town) and South (Junction) railway stations respectively. All Kochi city buses passing through the Kaloor-Palarivattom stretch have a stop at the stadium.
